As the name suggests, microdermabrasion uses small particles to refine the dermal layer of skin – effectively a medical grade exfoliation. This gentle, non-invasive procedure uses a mechanical device containing fine crystals to polish your skin, followed by a vacuum to remove the dead cells. This generates a new, smoother layer of skin to replace the skin that has been removed, resulting in a more youthful and radiant complexion.
Following microdermabrasion treatment, your skin is better primed to absorb anti-aging or anti-acne creams, greatly improving their benefit. Furthermore, removal of the outermost layer of dead cells stimulates the cells that produce collagen and encourages new cell growth as part of the natural regeneration process. In turn, this stimulates blood flow which results in a more glowing complexion.
Microdermabrasion can be used for acne scar treatment, minimising imperfections such as minor blemishes, blackheads, clogged pores, age spots and fine lines and improving the appearance of tired, dull, flaky or oily skin as well as uneven skin tone. Facial microdermabrasion is gentler than dermabrasion (which tends to be performed by medical practitioners for severe scars) and treatment takes about one hour.
Microdermabrasion is suitable for all skin types and does not cause any scarring. You may notice your skin is dry, flaky and exhibit more redness than normal after treatment, however, your skin should fade back to your usual skin tone during the day following treatment. Some recipients experience slight bruising from the suction – be reassured this is temporary and will fade quickly. For those with congested skin, microdermabrasion sometimes causes an initial breakout – this proves the treatment is working and the reaction should subside after a few days. You will see a significant and visible improvement in the quality of your skin after just one treatment, so it is well worth the minor discomfort and short-term side effects.
We recommend a course of multiple sessions and also advise that you accommodate several lifestyle behaviours to prevent your skin from becoming overly sensitised, such as avoiding excessive sun exposure, using sunscreen and avoiding other facial treatments (retinol or acne cream) in the weeks prior to and following your session. We are very happy to advise on the best pre and post-treatment care when you book your appointment with us, to ensure you get the most out of your session.
